Chapter Nine

Once Jace left, Effie showered and got ready for her meeting with Jianna. They were scheduled to meet at Skippers because Jianna had promised she’d make her a reservation, and Effie hadn’t told her that she’d already had a chance to enjoy the upscale restaurant. Luckily, lunch was a little more casual, and Effie could dress in slacks and a nice button-up blouse.

They were just seated—Effie, Jianna, and Jianna’s wolf, Ruin, sitting on the floor next to Jianna—when a group of women walked past their table, led by a woman with rainbow hair and a Crimson Moon staff polo shirt. Jianna stood up and greeted them.

“Hello, Dorothy, Lois, Jacinta, and Helena. I’m so glad to see you’re going to enjoy a nice lunch today before the event.”

“Well, Candi insisted.” The older of the four women nodded toward the rainbow-haired woman, though she didn’t look happy as she said it.

“Candi’s right. You should enjoy yourself this afternoon. We have everything taken care of, and today is a day for you to just relax and let it all happen.”

“I’m just surprised to see you here. I figured you’d be heading up the preparation for the ball tonight,” the woman replied.

Jianna gave an amused grin to Effie before turning back to the woman. “No, I have staff for that”—she nodded toward Candi—“And my staff has staff for that, but I do have my phone on me in case any emergencies arise, of which, I have no doubt, there will be none.”

“Well, I certainly hope not. The hotel is so new, after all. Anything goes wrong at this event, and word will spread everywhere.”

Jianna’s face kept its cool composure. “I have absolutely all confidence in all my staff. Your event is going to go off without a hitch, and I have no doubt that, for the next year, everyone will be talking about how spectacular it was.”

“We’ll see.” The three women behind her made various grunts and harrumphs before Candi got them walking again.

Jianna sat back down. “Do you know them?” she asked.

Effie shook her head.

Jianna’s eyes widened a bit. “Oh, for some reason, I thought you did. Sorry, I didn’t introduce you, but you really don’t want to be involved in any of that. The dragon matriarchs, they’re very high-strung and worried about their event tonight. I don’t know what Candi had to do to convince them to leave setup supervision and have lunch.”

“It almost sounds like she wants something to go wrong,” Effie remarked.

Jianna shrugged. “Some people you can’t please no matter what. And then, there are those people who do derive some sort of satisfaction from when things go wrong. But that’s neither here nor there. Tell me, how did you enjoy your time with Bellisimo yesterday?”

“He was wonderful,” Effie gushed. “Thank you so much for that.”

Jianna waved her hand. “It’s nothing. I have standing appointments with him all the time. Did you do something fun last night after getting gussied up?”

“Actually, I ended up eating here.”

“Alone?” Jianna asked, though the sparkle in her eyes told Effie that she already knew more than she was letting on.
